WorkCase study / Tuition centre

PrimePlus Tutoring.

A Milton Keynes tuition centre was running fifty weeks of lessons on personal phones, text messages and conversations at the door. We built one system with three ways in: a parents’ app, a tutor portal and an office dashboard. Then we rebuilt the website that new families find it through.

01 / Where it started

Fifty weeks of lessons, no single record.

PrimePlus teaches Maths, English and Science in small groups of three or four across centres in Milton Keynes, fifty weeks a year. Parents commit to a long programme and, reasonably, want to see what it is doing.

  • Messages and absences arrived as texts on tutors’ personal phones.
  • Progress was explained at the door at pick-up, with nothing written down for the parent.
  • The website ran on a heavy page builder and was slow on the phones most parents use.

02 / How it ran

One system, then the shop window.

The office dashboard came first, then the people around it, then the website.

Step 1
01

Office dashboard

Enrolments, timetable, registers and reports in one place.

Step 2
02

Parents’ app

Lessons, notes, homework, messages and absences on the parent’s phone.

Step 3
03

Tutor portal

Tutors moved off the app to a web portal that works on a classroom tablet.

Step 4
04

iPhone access

The same app as an installable web app with push notifications, no App Store wait.

Step 5
05

Website rebuild

Off the page builder, page by page, onto a fast custom theme. Live 12 October.

Step 6
06

Ads landing pages

Five focused pages for Google Ads, one per school stage.

03 / What we built

A register at 4pm, seen by a parent at 4:01.

One API sits behind all three surfaces. The office runs the centre from the dashboard, tutors take the register and write up each child’s lesson in the portal, and parents see their side of the same record in the app.

  • A learning record, not just a tick. Each register entry carries what was covered, the workbook pages reached, the tutor’s note and, where it helps, a photo of the work. The tutor chooses per note what a parent sees.
  • Modelled on how the centre enrols. Fifteen packages, with GCSE subjects ticked one by one, each with its exam board. A pupil can attend more than one centre.
  • One channel for messages and absences. Nothing sits on a tutor’s own phone, and the register is right before the lesson starts.
  • Safeguarding first. Each family sees only its own children, sign-in uses an emailed code, and records are backed up every hour.
  • Welcome packs that write themselves. A new parent or tutor gets a PDF pack by email with the right link for their role.

04 / The website

Where families find the centre.

The app screens hold real children’s records, so we show the public side here.

05 / The website rebuild

Same look, a third of the weight.

  • Every page re-created off the page builder, matched to the original within a few pixels.
  • Stylesheet cut from 643 KB to 194 KB, with the jQuery and builder scripts removed.
  • The hero slider redone in plain CSS, and responsive images on every page.
  • Search groundwork: unique titles and descriptions, structured data and a clean sitemap.
  • Cookie consent in front of Google Analytics and Ads, with the legal pages to match.

06 / Where it stands

Live, in use, and growing.

The parents’ app, tutor portal and office dashboard are in daily use, and the new website and Ads landing pages went live in October. We keep working with the centre on new features, search and Google Ads.

Keep watching.
